is Emma Make?
Emma is a British designer from Cambridge based in Lisbon, Portugal. The biggest joy in her work is colour and the process involved usually centres around mixing analogue and digital methods. Subjects are generally drawn from nature, such as; imagined or real African landscapes, wildflowers, and animals. Read on to get to know the artist.
How
does Emma mix analogue and digital methods?
Emma: “Often my designs start out as sketches in pencil. I then draw over these using my tablet. I also like to draw in ink and then layer these using a program called Adobe Illustrator which turns the line work into vectors. Currently though I'm very into drawing digitally in Photoshop using my surface laptop and pen. I've recently found digital paintbrushes which create a great analogue effect.”

Why
is colour the biggest joy in Emma's work?
Emma: “Colour is important to me probably due to my travels and love of ethnic and modern art. I like taking unexpected palettes and adding excitement through fluorescent highlights, or even muddy tones. I think colour is the key to making work beautiful.”
What
is it about nature and travel that inspires the designs?
Emma: “As mentioned before, my travels and nature are a big influence on my love of colour. I was able to witness the beautiful colours of Romanian folk art growing up in Bucharest, and at home the surprising colours of Ethiopian baskets and middle eastern vases. Perhaps more obvious is my subject of African mountainscapes which were inspired by the landscapes I witnessed in Ethiopia, Malawi, South Africa, and Mozambique.”
