The illustrator and designer creates art about the people and places that bring her joy
Who
is Maheswari Janarthanan?
Maheswari is an illustrator and designer based in San Diego, California. Originally from Chennai, India, Maheswari has always loved drawing since she was a kid. As a dreamer, her work is inspired by people, nature, and the universe, creating work that portrays the magic and wonder of the world.
Why
did Maheswari first get into illustration and design?
Maheswari: “When I was a child I loved to draw houses, flowers, and butterflies and my favourite period in my school was drawing. I always look forward to drawing classes. I remember as a child I loved drawing more than playing with friends. So this interest in drawing made me study design in college and my love for illustration and art made me an Illustrator. I enjoy painting and drawing. Art makes me so happy whether it's a painting or looking at a flower or the sky.”

How
has the mystical and magic influenced Maheswari's work?
Maheswari: “I was born in India, the land of mysticism and spirituality. Growing up I have read poems and stories about creation and the cosmos, and how we are all connected. This fascinated me and at the same time inspired me. My illustration became my way of expressing my thoughts and feelings. Looking at a flower just blows my mind – the colour, patterns, shape, line, details…”
What
has been keeping Maheswari inspired in the past year?
Maheswari: “For me it's the nature, colours, art books, and yoga that has kept me sane during these difficult times. I have a small patio garden where I grew flowers and herbs and that helped me a lot. I created more stuff last year. I think it was my way of keeping me sane.”
