Maison des Pêches are showing that you can stay on trend and save the planet at the same time
Who
are Maison des Pêches?
You’ve seen hand-beaded jewellery popping up everywhere on Instagram this summer but Maison des Pêches are doing things a little bit differently. In order to create more sustainable accessories, Maison des Pêches are creating their jewellery collections from only second hand beads. Dropping at the end of every month, you can get your hands on the cutest jewellery, from beach-style shell earrings to 90s inspired necklaces. We spoke with the founder Clelie to hear more about starting Maison des Pêches and why sustainability is such an important part of the collections.
What
kickstarted Maison des Pêches?
Clelie: “I always loved beads and the idea of making my own jewellery however and whenever I needed it. I also felt like it would be fun to start something by myself on Instagram and see where it goes from there. With the current environmental crisis and the consumer culture, I thought it was important to not bring in more items that would create waste but actually which would help reduce waste. At first I was happy making cute jewellery mixing both new beads (which I have been buying for a few years) and some second-hand beads as well, but recently I changed this way of thinking and am now only creating collections with pre-loved beads, to give them a new purpose.”

Why
is sustainability so important to Maison des Pêches?
Clelie: “For some years now, I have been mainly shopping second-hand clothing and really love the fact that you can find little treasures hidden if you are lucky, it's almost thrilling! However, the idea of using second-hand beads actually came from using some old necklaces which my mom gave me because I thought the beads looked fun, but after searching more in the jewellery section of charity stores, I noticed that a lot of necklaces (which no one would wear the way they look) were made out of super cute beads, hence came my idea to repurpose these forgotten items.
When you hear how bad fast fashion is for the planet and you see some of the stats that demonstrate this, you as a consumer actually hold a lot of power in your purchase, even if it's just a few items, which is why it was important for me to have a brand that did not just add to the environmental crisis.
It's also super important to support small businesses because of the way they make the items. Us small businesses would usually take more time to make an order, we also buy very small quantities of raw materials to make our collections which is much better for the environment compared to big corporations, exploiting employees, polluting the planet with transportation. These corporations are also allowing the problem of consumerism where items can be found anywhere (online or in stores) and are very cheap which leads to so much wastage.”
How
does Maison des Pêches hope to help other organisations through the collections?
Clelie: “Maison des Pêches is not yet to become a full time job for me and since I already wished to make a difference by using second-hand beads (helping charity shops and the planet), I also thought it would be good to help other movements, such as Lebanon this month after the devastating explosion in Beirut. Our generation is constantly bombarded with horrible news happening around the world and the least we can do is use our voice (either through social media or via donations) to generate a discussion about it and try to help.
I also think donating and talking about these issues around the world helps users connect and provides a purpose which is very important for our generation. Maison des Pêches also wishes to support other small businesses, by either sharing some of their posts on social media or by buying some of their products. I recently bought a few bags and candles made from small shops on insta and I am so happy about it, it almost feels more personal and unique especially when I know the items were handmade. these small businesses are also very creative and talented and more people should buy from them if they can!”
