Who
is Niege Borges?
Niege Borges is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York and originally from the south of Brazil, where she graduated in Graphic Design. Niege is known for her colourful, irreverent, and fun designs and illustrations. Even though she works with different illustration styles, her personal work has a lot of textures and often portrays fabulous women and fashion.
Why
does Niege often portray women in her illustrations?
Niege: “I basically have more fun drawing women, the different types of hair, outfits, and body shapes are great to portray. I also like to draw people in an androgynous way so more people can feel represented and also because it gives me more freedom.”
“Not too long ago a little latina girl saw my illustration of a latina woman and she said that it looked like her and I was very happy that she felt represented.”
What
women in particular inspired the women in the designs?
Niege: “Latinas and black women inspire me a lot. I am from Brazil, which is a super diverse country and I live in New York, which is also super diverse, so it is important to me to reflect that in my illustrations. Also these women are often overlooked by society, so I like to celebrate their beauty. Not too long ago a little latina girl saw my illustration of a latina woman and she said that it looked like her and I was very happy that she felt represented.”
How
does fashion influence the illustrations?
Niege: “Since I was a teenager I always loved to look at fashion editorials, I always loved the concepts, obviously the outfits and most importantly, the poses. I use fashion editorials and photoshoots as reference often to bring movement to my illustrations and to the poses of the people I draw.”
