is Ramzia Jawara?
Ramzia is an interdisciplinary artist specialising in photography. With a background in performance, Ramzia is able to create playful work through many different mediums and tell stories in visually dynamic ways. Using art as a vessel to provoke thought and make statements about issues in modern culture – including current affairs over race, gender, and sexuality – Ramzia’s work is powerful in portraying an intuitive and emotional response to the world around us. What
inspires your artistic practice?
Ramzia: “My work is often inspired by personal experience, a lot of which is composed of my immediate surroundings. I am very receptive to the world around me and project my internalisations into my work. I am highly driven by feeling, and through reflection and introspection, I am able to see the way something has affected me and where these feelings lie in a bigger picture, which can then be converted into true art.”

How
does an interdisciplinary approach influence your work?
Ramzia: “I prefer to open myself up to more than one discipline when making art as I feel that the most important part of the process for me is getting the message across. By pushing boundaries I am able to display concepts through the mediums I feel fit most to the message, and demonstrate the themes I explore in each piece of work.”
Why
do you think it is important to provoke thought through art?
Ramzia: “I view art as a powerful tool in unifying people by taking people outside of their own peripheral vision, resonating with people, or laying somewhere in between. In doing this we are allowing space for question. We are all teachers and students and if we can provoke thought then we are provoking conversation which can lead to empathy as we recognise the similarities and differences in each other. Always evolving.”
